Reality specials, series to be main focus of venture

NEW YORK — Newsweek Prods., the magazine TV arm responsible for the PBS series “HealthWeek” and such specials as “John Glenn: American Hero” and “Destination Space,” has partnered with Carlton Television in the U.K. to develop content for international broadcast and cable.

The venture will focus on nonfiction and reality specials and series. Newsweek Prods. and Carlton, a production company and international distributor of TV and film, will create a development fund to finance projects in their early stages. They expect to announce a slate by the end of 2000.

Development and project decisions will be overseen by a joint editorial board consisting of Newsweek Prods. prexy and Washington Post Co. veep Patrick Butler, Carlton program director Steve Hewlett, Carlton controller of factual programming Polly Bide and Newsweek Prods. veep Timothy Smith.

Former BBC TV News head Richard Clemmow will be the executive in charge of production.

“The joint venture will greatly expand our ability to develop and produce nonfiction programs for both the U.S. and international markets,” said Butler.
