Inside Move: Indian ‘Millionaire’ in trouble

Legal woes continue for Rupe, skein accused of inciting gambling

NEW DELHI — Rupert Murdoch is once again in trouble with the courts in India — this time over Star TV’s format of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.”

A petition has been filed against “Kaun Banega Crorepati” under the Prevention of Gambling Act and Prize Competition Act of 1955. The petitioner accuses the program makers of abetting gambling by inducing the public through advertisements to answer questions correctly in order to become millionaires.

A Bombay court has issued summons to the News Corp. chairman, “Millionaire” producer Siddharth Basu and Star Plus CEO Peter Mukerjea.

Satcaster Star TV was sued for obscenity in an Indian court two years ago.
