Gibson to take 'Primetime' assignments
ABC News is close to announcing that Jack Ford will be named a substitute anchor for Charles Gibson on “Good Morning America.”
Ford, who some have considered an heir apparent for Gibson’s spot on the ayem show, will fill in for Gibson while he’s on assignment for “Primetime Thursday.”
In addition, “20/20 Downtown” anchor Elizabeth Vargas and “GMA” medical correspondent Nancy Snyderman will alternate as substitutes for Diane Sawyer when she’s reporting for “Primetime Thursday.”
While insiders say Sawyer and Gibson won’t be going anywhere soon, the news seems to indicate that ABC has a long-term transition plan in place, with Ford an integral part.
New deal will cement an arrangement in place since August 1999, when Ford signed a reported $10 million, five-year contract with ABC News, which includes “GMA” duties as well as a co-anchor slot on “20/20.” ABC News declined to comment.
