LONDON — Andy Harries has been appointed controller of drama at Granada TV. He is already controller of comedy.
Granada is the production powerhouse of the U.K.’s ITV network, and drama is its cornerstone. Promotion will arguably make Harries the most powerful creative exec in British commercial television.
The elevation is a reward for his success in positioning Granada at the leading edge of British comedy in the eight years since he joined the company. His hits have included “Cold Feet” for ITV and “The Royale Family” for the BBC.
He has retained a loose relationship with drama since 1996 as an exec producer for Granada Film, the company’s movie arm.
“This is the job that I’ve always wanted since joining Granada,” Harries said. “We have lots of very good people with a solid slate of programs including returning series such as ‘A and E’ and some fantastic projects in the pipeline like ‘Dr. Zhivago’ and ‘The Forsyte Saga.’ ”
“The department has a gold standard heritage, and I want to make sure we build on that relationship both here and around the world as the makers of memorable, distinctive drama.”
