Award recognizes int'l appeal, impact of work

TV writer-producer Stephen J. Cannell will receive the 2001 Showman of the Year Award from the Monte Carlo TV Festival.

Cannell’s award recognizes a creative force in television whose body of work has international appeal and will have a lasting impact on the entertainment industry.

“As we celebrate the festival’s past and look to its future, Mr. Cannell is the perfect recipient for this award,” said David Tomatis, secretary general of the festival.

Cannell is best known for his career as one of TV’s top writer-producers, having created more than 35 shows, including “The Rockford Files,” “The A-Team,” “Hunter” and “Silk Stalkings.”

The award will be presented by Prince Albert of Monaco during a gala ceremony at the 41st annual event Feb. 21. Other honorees include actress Joan Collins, producer Robert Halmi Sr. and Telefonica Media prexy Juan Jose Nieto.
