Missing games of the world champion Los Angeles Lakers televised on free TV is no longer an issue for DirecTV subscribers in Los Angeles.
DirecTV added the L.A. independent station KCAL (channel 9) and the New York UPN affiliate WWOR to its lineup of local stations in those markets Wednesday.
KCAL’s package of Lakers games has previously been unavailable through DirecTV.
The deal gives each of the two markets six local broadcast stations in the DirecTV local channel package. While those six channels represent the six biggest commercial broadcast networks in New York, DirecTV has yet to work out a deal with the Los Angeles UPN affiliate KCOP (Channel 13).
DirecTV added Los Angeles WB affiliate KTLA in June, following the introduction of the four top broadcast network affiliates in New York and L.A. last November.
DirecTV competitor EchoStar does not carry KCOP or KCAL but is in discussions on both. EchoStar has offered all six New York stations and KTLA for some time.
