Four newcomers receive nods

The Directors Guild of America named a half-dozen directors of commercials, including four first-timers, as nominees Tuesday for outstanding directorial achievement in 1999.

Joining rookie nominees Brian Buckley, Dewey Nicks and the team of Adam Cameron & Simon Cole (also known as “Joe Public”) were Rocky Morton, who received his second nomination, and 11-time nominee Leslie Dektor. Dektor has been nominated every year from 1984 to 1992 and won the award in 1992. Only Joe Pytka has more DGA commercial nominations (12).

DGA president Jack Shea and awards committee chairman Howard Storm announced the nominations, which cited the work in 21 commercials. Reflecting the boom in Internet business, nine of the commercials pitched either dot-com businesses or online brokerages, while five of the ads touted food or beverages.

The kudos will be announced at the 52nd annual DGA Awards Dinner on March 11 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. The organization’s final nominations this year will be unveiled this coming Tuesday with the daytime serials and children’s programming selections.
