MADRID — U.K. TV giant Carlton Communications and Barcelona-based TV production house Media Pro have formed a joint venture, MediaCarlton, to produce soaps and drama series for Spanish-speaking TV markets.
Based in Barcelona, the 50-50 project will be run by exec president Jaume Ferrus, former general manager of the Sogecable-owned digital TV platform Canal Satelite Digital (CSD).
Carlton’s move into Spanish TV production is the latest thrust by foreign groups in one of the fastest-expanding markets in Western Europe, powered by a huge hike in TV advertising and massive deregulation including two new free-to-air digital terrestrial TV licenses last month.
Production for these channels is expected to be dominated by four to five groups in Spain.
Carlton, which already has co-production deals with Australia’s Channel 7 and Germany’s Tele-Munchen, holds 7.5% in Spain’s only digital terrestrial pay TV operator, Quiero TV.
