CanWest’s Global TV ramps up

Calgary 7, Edmonton's ITV and Lethbridge's CISA to join up

VANCOUVER — Trumpeting the absorption of three recently acquired WIC TV stations in Alberta into its new Canuck national network, CanWest’s Global Television is set to announce new funding commitments to six Alberta-based industry associations and expanded plans for western Canadian programming.

CanWest Global plans to release details of the new funding and programs on Sept. 5.

Who gets coin

The associations to receive Global largesse are the Alberta Film Commission, Alberta Motion Picture Industry Assn., Banff Television Fund, Western Independent Producers Fund, National Screen Institute and the Edmonton Economic Development Office for the Arts.

The three former WIC stations — Calgary 7, ITV in Edmonton and CISA in Lethbridge — will formally join the network at that time.

The hookup of the Alberta stations will fulfill the long aspirations of Winnipeg-based Izzy Asper and his family to build a national television network.
