Canucks seek indie channel

CanWest looking to acquire six digital specialty licenses

VANCOUVER — CanWest Global Communications and Astral Television Networks are seeking a Canuck specialty license for an independent filmmakers channel.

CanWest Global, owner of the Global Television Network, is also applying to the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission in Ottawa for six new digital specialty licenses of its own.

CanWest Global now operates only one specialty service, Prime TV, and is trying to catch up with leading network CTC and the government-subsidized CBC, which each operate multiple specialty webs.

The six channels for which CanWest is applying are Vital TV, a health web; Your Money, aimed at individual investors; DesigNation, about visual arts and architecture; Canadian Travel Channel; high technology web Digital 1; and Violet, focusing on romance and relationships.
