Pay cabler also hosts Bassett's directorial debut
NEW YORK — Showtime has greenlit “Ruby’s Bucket of Blood,” a telepic exec produced by Whoopi Goldberg and starring Angela Bassett, who will also produce.
Bassett has been cast as the owner of a Louisiana juke joint who loses her star thrush and hires a white singer to fill in. Peter Werner (“The ’70s”) will direct from a script by Julie Hebert. Tom Leonardis (Lifetime’s “Strong Medicine”) will serve as co-exec producer; Jane Bartelme (“Legends of the Fall”) will co-produce. Monica Foster will serve as creative executive for Showtime.
Bassett has also closed a deal with the pay cabler to make her directorial debut on a telepic to be selected by both parties. Showtime has given numerous actors — including Kevin Bacon, Jon Voight, Jo Beth Williams, Diane Ladd and Adam Arkin — the opportunity to make their first feature-length project for the network.
Bassett recently completed production on “The Score,” opposite Robert De Niro, Edward Norton and Marlon Brando. She also appears with Danny Glover in playwright Athol Fugard’s “Boesman and Lena,” which will premiere at this year’s New York Film Festival.
“Ruby’s” is set to begin production later this month.
