The Sunset Room was adorned with a bevy of young female talent Friday evening as Daily Variety celebrated its 10 Actresses to Watch special issue.
On hand to salute the 10 young thesps, five of whom were present, at the event — Aaliyah, Linda Cardellini, Piper Perabo, Teri Polo and Emmy Rossum — were Daily Variety’s Peter Bart, Charles Koones and Jonathan Taylor, along with a handful of reps from various tenpercenteries, studios and praiseries.
Polo happily accepted her honor, noting that receiving recognition from those who work in the biz is a positive reinforcement. “It’s a message to me that someone has seen my work, saw that I worked hard, and they are telling me to keep going,” she said.
Cardellini described her success as being “overwhelming and at times hard to believe, but I am having a great time with it.”
Perabo felt privileged to be one of the 10. “Actors swim in a huge pond. On any given day I am one in a million, but tonight I stand out with nine other talented women, and that is a remarkable honor.”
Other thesps who were feted, though not on hand, were Monica Bellucci, Lara Belmont, Iben Hjejle, Sanaa Lathan and Gina McKee.
Thirteen-year-old Rossum and singer-actress Aaliyah — who makes her bigscreen debut this month in “Romeo Must Die”– both admit to taking big steps at young ages. Aaliyah stated that she will continue singing as she searches for her next screen role. Meanwhile, Rossum has “Songcatcher” bowing in the fall.
