Dick Peabody, the 6-foot-6-inch actor who portrayed the gentle giant farmboy Littlejohn on the 1960s TV series “Combat,” died Dec. 27 of prostate cancer in El Camino, a community near Placerville, where he wrote a column called “Peabody’s Place” for the Placerville Mountain Democrat. He was 74.
The TV series, which starred the late Vic Morrow, illustrated the ravages of World War II on Europe. It remains popular in syndication and on video.
Peabody amassed more than 120 television show credits including “Gunsmoke” and also appeared in six features, including “Support Your Local Sheriff” starring James Garner.
In 1971, Peabody joined KFI radio as a talkshow host, interviewing Hollywood celebrities from a booth at Universal Studios.
He is survived by his wife, Tina.
