Macbean ankles U.K. distrib Itel

Exec bit by acting bug

LONDON — Andrew Macbean is quitting as chief exec of U.K. program distributor Itel after 17 years with the company. A keen amateur thesp, he is planning to go to drama school.

His decision appears to have been triggered by the proposed merger of Itel’s parent United News & Media with Carlton Communications, which would lead to the merger of Itel and Carlton Intl.

There remain considerable doubts whether the agreed merger will actually go through, however. The U.K.’s competition authorities are studying the deal, and fellow ITV group Granada has declared its plans to make a counterbid for either United or Carlton.
