Sony Music Entertainment chairman/CEO Thomas Mottola has named his first No. 2, promoting Mel Ilberman to vice chair at SME. A 12-year Sony veteran, Ilberman most recently held the chair at Sony Music Intl.
“Mel was one of the chief architects of our global expansion,” Mottola said. “His new role will enable him to work even more closely with me in developing the overall strategic direction of the company. He’ll play a key role in helping transition the company into the digital era.”
Concurrent with Ilberman’s appointment, Sony Music Intl. prexy Robert Bowlin has been upped to chair of the international division and exec VP Rick Dobbis has been elevated to the international prexy post.
Bowlin, a nine-year veteran of Sony, is also corporate exec VP for Sony Music Entertainment. Dobbis joined Sony’s international music operations last year, having previously served as Polygram’s prexy for continental Europe and as a member of Polygram’s international management board.
