Gallic album sales record a sour note

Revenues fall 2.5%

PARIS — The French music industry has recorded its worst results in 15 years, with album sales dropping 5% to 114.7 million units in 1999.

Sales of singles dipped 9% to 36.4 million units, while total revenues fell 2.5% to $1.2 billion.

Gallic industry experts believe the drop in traditional sales of CDs is due to the increase in the number of people using CD recording equipment to copy albums as well as the number of people downloading music off the Internet.

The upside for the French, in this depressed market, is that local artists still hold a 54% market share.
