Faires exits Mammoth

Diskery keeps indie label

Mammoth Records founder-prexy Jay Faires has ankled the diskery, Buena Vista Music Group chair Bob Cavallo and prexy David Berman announced Tuesday. The move comes 2 1/2 years after the Walt Disney Co. acquired the Mammoth label in July, 1997.

Faires founded Mammoth in 1988, developing an eclectic artist roster that included Juliana Hatfield, Frente! and the Squirrel Nut Zippers, the swing revivalists who scored a left-field hit with “Hell” prior to Disney’s purchase of the label.

Mammoth will retain its indie label status as part of the Buena Vista Group, the recorded music and music publishing arm of the Walt Disney Co. that was formed in 1998.
