David McPherson has been elevated to exec veep of A&R and urban music for the Sony-owned Epic Records Group. In addition to heading the group’s urban music department, McPherson will serve as an A&R resource for all Epic Records Group labels.
In making the announcement, Epic Records Group prexy Polly Anthony – to whom McPherson will report – said, “Since joining the company, David has helped bring the Epic Records and 550 Music A&R efforts to a whole new level, signing and nurturing a series of artists who will help define the future of urban and popular music.” His most notable success at Epic to date has been the platinum-selling debut album from Mandy Moore.
Most recently senior veep of A&R and urban music for Epic Records and 550 Music, McPherson began his career at Mercury Records in 1991, advancing to director of A&R for the label.
He then segued to a similar post at Jive Records, where he was subsequently promoted to veep of A&R. During his tenure with Jive, he was responsible for bringing such artists as the Backstreet Boys and Joe to the label.
