Carroll, McDaniel join ‘Cole’ telepic

Townsend at the helm

Diahann Carroll and James McDaniel (“NYPD Blue”) have joined the cast of the NBC telepic “The Natalie Cole Story,” based on her autobio “Angel on My Shoulder,” due to hit book stores in October.

Carroll has been cast as Cole’s mother, Maria Cole, and McDaniel will play Nat King Cole.

Robert Townsend is helming the biopic — now lensing in Toronto — which is being executive produced by Cole, Robert Greenwald (“The Audrey Hepburn Story”) and Liz Lang.

Theresa Randle (“Space Jam”) and Randy Goodwin, who appears on UPN’s “Girlfriends,” have also joined the cast. Randle will portray Natalie from 1970 to 1984; Cole will play herself for the remainder of the telefilm. Goodwin will play songwriter Marvin Yancy.

Pic is skedded to air Dec. 10.
