Quadriplegic sells memoirs to Hyperion

Paralyzed in seventh grade, woman graduated from Harvard

Brooke Ellison, 21, the first quadriplegic to graduate from Harvard, has sold her memoirs to Hyperion.

Ellison, struck by a car on the first day of seventh grade, made headlines and appeared on “The Today Show” after graduating with honors and addressing her class at the Harvard commencement in May. She was a full-time student at Harvard, which wouldn’t have been possible without the assistance of her mother, who moved to Cambridge and attended every class with her.

“This is a story not just of the heroics of one disabled person, but of the heroics of a family and the extraordinary bond between Brooke and her mom,” Hyperion publisher Martha Levin told Daily Variety.

Autobiography will chronicle Ellison’s accident and its aftermath, her experiences at Harvard and relationship with her mother, who’s likely to contribute to the book. Ellison, who founded a student advocacy group at Harvard, now does speaking engagements, and the book is likely to include inspirational advice.

Jennifer Lang is Ellison’s editor at Hyperion, which bought North American rights. Ellison was repped by WMA agent Jonathan Rosen, who will shop TV and film rights.
