Tad Smith has been named to the newly created position of president of the Media Division of Cahners Business Information.
Smith will have oversight of a broad range of publications, including Variety and Daily Variety as well as the Web portal Variety.com, plus Cahners Digital Group and the newly acquired eLogic.
Smith served as senior vice president of e-commerce for Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide before joining Cahners. Prior to that, he ran the worldwide merchandising and concessions business for BMG Entertainment, based in London.
Smith will report to Marc Teren, president and CEO of Cahners, which is part of the Reed Elsevier global group. Smith is a Princeton graduate who holds an MA from Harvard Business School.
Besides the Media Division, Cahners also established two other divisions — Manufacturing and Electronics, to be headed by Jeff Greisch, and Construction and Retail, headed by David Israel.
The Cahners Media Division also encompasses Multichannel News, Broadcasting & Cable and Publishers Weekly, among others.
“Tad Smith’s extensive entertainment, consulting and market-sector experience ideally positions him to lead our world-class Media Division,” Teren said.
