NEW YORK — The new ad line for “The Vagina Monologues” sounds like something out of David Cronenberg’s gynecologist horror film “Dead Ringers”: “We had one. Now we’re going multiple.”
Actually, a bunch of enterprising producers have simply found a novel way to keep their show on the boards when Eve Ensler leaves her one-person play on Jan. 23.
Julie Kavner, Swoosie Kurtz and Audra McDonald will be the first trio to perform “The Vagina Monologues,” from Feb. 8-20 at the Westside Theater. Mary Alice, Amy Irving and Rosie Perez take over from Feb. 22 through March 5.
No perf dates are given beyond that, but the “TVM” ad teases with a number of other starry names, including Glenn Close, Winona Ryder, Marlo Thomas, Ricki Lake, Julianna Margulies and Marisa Tomei.
The strictly legit contingency is repped by Kathleen Chalfant and Elizabeth Franz, while Erica Jong and Linda Ellerbee appear to be expanding their resumes in 2000.
“We had the idea in the back of our heads even before the show opened,” said lead producer David Stone. “A month and a half ago we realized it was the way to go.”
The producer said all the women listed in the ad would play for two weeks.
A substantial portion of the proceeds from “The Vagina Monologues” will go to the V-Day Fund, a charity that fights violence against women.
