Dr. Seuss-based musical continues for two weeks
SOUTHBURY, Conn. — The Broadway-bound musical “Seussical” has extended its Boston run at the Colonial Theater for two weeks through Sept. 30. The Boston tryout of the Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty tuner, based on the Dr. Seuss children’s books, was originally announced for an Aug. 27-Sept. 17 run.
A possible extension was always factored into the Boston run, however. Producers and presenters believe that announcing runs in increments coaxes auds to buy tickets early, filling performances as much as possible. The first full week of the Boston run of the new musical, which received mixed reviews locally, grossed $343,038 out of a potential $752,998.
Extension allows for more work on the show, which switched costume designers just before the first preview as Catherine Zuber was replaced by William Ivey Long. New York previews at the Richard Rodgers Theater still begin Oct. 15; opening night remains Nov. 9.
