NEW YORK — Susan Dietz, who ran Canon Theatricals for over a year with former business partner Joan Stein, will now serve as president of the entertainment company. Stein left Canon Theatricals last month to form Martin/Stein with actor Steve Martin. Dietz, who continues to produce under the Canon banner, announced the opening of Canon Theatricals Conservatory, which will offer acting and production classes for young people ages 10-18.
A former teacher, Dietz ran the drama department at Harvard School in North Hollywood before becoming artistic director of the Pasadena Playhouse. She had planned to reopen the playhouse’s famous school. “But it never happened,” Dietz recalls. “Money problems.” Now she gets her wish with the conservancy. “The theater is a dinosaur if you don’t develop young audiences and young talent,” says Dietz, who has hired Joal Paley, creator of the musical “Ruthless,” to be the school’s artistic director.Canon Theatricals also announced the production of a film, “All Over the Guy,” produced by Dietz and Donnie Land, with screenplay by Dan Bucatinsky, based on his play “I Know You Are But What Am I?”, which was produced two years ago by Canon at the Tiffany Playhouse in West Hollywood. Shooting for “All Over the Guy begins June 15.
