Follow-up to 'Leading Ladies' gives equal time to legit's men
“My Favorite Broadway” is now a series.
The Metropolitan Entertainment Group is following up its successful “My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies” with another concert, “My Favorite Broadway: The Love Songs.”
Hosted by Julie Andrews, the one-night affair takes place at City Center on Oct. 16. “The Leading Ladies” concert, also hosted by Andrews, had been staged at Carnegie Hall on Sept. 28, 1998.
Unlike the first event, the follow-up gives equal time to legit’s gentlemen. At City Center, performers singing Broadway love songs include Michael Crawford, Linda Eder, Peter Gallagher, Heather Headley, Jennifer Holliday, Rebecca Luker, Marin Mazzie, Bebe Neuwirth, Adam Pascal, Chita Rivera, Brent Spiner and Patrick Stewart, among others.
Graciela Daniele directs with Paul Gemignani conducting the American Theater Orchestra.
As with its predecessor, “The Love Songs” will be taped for broadcast on PBS’s “Great Performance” series at a date to be determined.
A “Leading Ladies” tour had been planned but did not materialize. “We put one together,” said Jeff Rowland, MEG senior vice president of theater and television. “But we could not plug in PBS to support it in the way we wanted. That ‘Love Songs’ is our second concert makes the possibility of a tour this time more likely. “
