NEW YORK — The Broadway production of “The Green Bird” will close Sunday at the Cort Theatre, having played 16 previews and 35 regular performances. Julie Taymor directed Carlo Gozzi’s Italian tale, translated by Albert Bermel and Ted Emery, with music by Elliot Goldenthal.
The show hit a B.O. peak in its second week of regular perfs (April 24-30), grossing $264,476 out of a potential of $490,126, after which it continued to decline steadily. Last week’s gross was $152,757, which represented only 35.47% capacity, Broadway’s lowest for that time period.
According to Variety’s Critics Tally, “The Green Bird” received eight favorable reviews, three unfavorable and five mixed. The show was produced by Ostar Enterprises, Theatre for a New Audience and Nina Lannan. It was originally produced in 1996 for Theatre for a New Audience, playing the New Victory Theatre in New York and then at the La Jolla Playhouse in Southern California.
