Event open to all theater pros
Broadway on Sunset, which offers development and production opportunities for new musicals, is gearing up for its second annual West Coast Musical Theater Conference, to be held Sept. 23-24 in Los Angeles.
Confab is open to all theater professionals (including producers, directors, writers, composers and actors) as well as the general public.
Helmer Julie Taymor (“The Lion King”) will deliver a keynote address at the confab, and Gordon Davidson, artistic director-producer for the Center Theater Group/Mark Taper Forum and Ahmanson Theater, will be feted with the nonprofit org’s inaugural Visionary Award for Theatrical Excellence.
Also participating are Broadway helmers Scott Ellis (“Steel Pier”) and Rob Marshall (“Cabaret”), actors Grover Dale (“Jerome Robbins’ Broadway”) and Davis Gaines (“The Phantom of the Opera”), CNN’s Larry King and Walt Disney Music prexy Chris Montan, among others.
Skedded events include “Writer & Composer Marketplace Open Mic,” at which writer-composers will present music, ideas and lyrics and solicit feedback from invited guests; “Libretto Q&A,” a question and answer session on the construction of a book in musical theater; “Getting Your Musical Produced — Director’s Roundtable,” a panel moderated by King; and “Hollywood in the Musical Theater Marketplace,” a panel moderated by Los Angeles Times arts writer Susan Freudenheim on the development and production of new stage musicals.
