Zeitgeist Films has acquired rights to Agnes Varda’s docu “The Gleaners and I” for specialized domestic release.
Pic, which the French filmmaker directed, wrote and produced through her company Cine Tamaris, follows several modern-day gleaners as they range over urban France in search of second-hand treasure.
Zeitgeist plans to open “Gleaners” at Manhattan’s Film Forum in early March and then expand to cities nationally, company co-president Emily Russo confirmed.
“Gleaners” screened at this year’s Cannes and Toronto fests, Canal Plus released it in France in July and the pic will unspool at this month’s New York Film Festival.
Zeitgeist co-prexies Russo and Nancy Gerstman worked with Varda in 1996 on the restoration and re-release of her late husband Jacques Demy’s “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.”
Among the company’s recent releases are David Riker’s “La Ciudad,” Deepa Mehta’s “Earth” and “Fire,” Abbas Kiarostami’s “The Taste of Cherry” and the current “Aimee & Jaguar.”
