New shingle buys film rights to cult novel
Filmmakers Turi Meyer and Al Septien have set up their own production shingle, Wicked Monkey Prods., and in their first buy have picked up rights to Jason Lutes’ graphic novel “Jar of Fools” as well as a script adaptation of the novel from writer-actor Jud Meyers.
Meyer and Septien are longtime writing partners. The former is a also a director who recently finished helming several episodes of American Movie Classics’ cable series “The Lot.” He also directed horror pics “Candyman: Day of the Dead” and “Sleepstalker.” Both those films were written by Meyer and Septien, with Septien producing “Candyman” and co-producing “Sleepstalker.”
“Jar of Fools” has been a cult hit and earned strong reviews from such publications as Wired and Details. Meyer’s adaptation spins the tale of a young magician searching for the truth behind his brother’s death amid the decaying world of Coney Island. Meyer is attached to direct the project, and Septien is producing.
Meyer and Septien had been affiliated with William Stuart’s Aurora Prods. for about four years before deciding to set up their own shop. Now they’re involved with Aurora and David Kirschner Prods. at Universal on the supernatural thriller “Immortals,” with Septien as exec producer and Meyer as co-producer. They’re also working on “Lobster Boy” with Aurora and Voyager Films and are writing a pic for Showtime.
Meyers is represented by Diverse Talent; Meyer and Septien, by Jeff Okin at Metropolitan Talent.
