Warner Bros.-based Jerry Weintraub Prods. has acquired the comedy spec “Day Trader” for what sources said is low against mid-six figures.
Written by Jeff Gutheim and Ari Steinbeck, “Day Trader” is the story of a high school student who, faced with having to pay his own way for college, discovers that the road to popularity is paved with gold when he strikes it rich for himself and his friends in the world of day trading.
Weintraub senior veep production John Tomko brought the project into the company and will produce with Weintraub. Warners production executive Steve Crystal will oversee the project for the studio.
Weintraub is currently prepping “Ocean’s Eleven,” starring George Clooney and directed by Steven Soderbergh. His credits include “The Avengers,” “The Karate Kid” franchise and “Diner.”
Friends since the third grade, this is the first spec sale for Gutheim and Steinbeck. The duo recently completed the comedy script “Crash Test Dummy” for Industry Entertainment. They are repped by Gayla Nethercott at Broder Kurland Webb Uffner and attorney Jared Levine.
