“Sakuya” will be the first feature film produced under the new Towani banner, the Japan-based joint production venture of Warner Bros., Nippon Television Broadcasting and Toshiba. Principal photography is set to start Feb. 15 in Kyoto.
Live-action pic concerns a teenage samurai girl, to be portrayed by Nozomi Ando, one of Japan’s top young actresses. Tomoo Haraguchi, a makeup and f/x veteran with over 50 films to his credit, will helm for the first time.
“‘Sakuya’ is the perfect debut picture under the Towani banner,” said Warner Bros. president and chief operating officer Alan Horn. “While it has a distinctly Japanese look and feel, it’s also a universal tale of love and tolerance that will appeal to family audiences all over the world.”
Towani was formed in 1998 to produce Japanese-language features and TV programming for Japanese and global markets.
