HOLLYWOOD — Tim Roth is in talks to play Professor Snape in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” for Warner Bros.
Snape is a darkly mysterious potions teacher at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where 11-year-old Harry is sent after he discovers that he is the orphaned offspring of two powerful wizards and must harness powers of his own.
The character of Snape recurs through the first three books in the series, so it is likely that Roth will put in multi-pic appearances in what WB expects will be a feature franchise under director Chris Columbus and producer David Heyman.
Steve Kloves adapted the first of the Potter novels by J.K. Rowling. The Oscar-nominated Roth becomes the second thesp in talks to enlist in “Potter” after Maggie Smith.
Roth, who’ll next be seen alongside John Travolta and Lisa Kudrow in the Nora Ephron-directed “Numbers,” is following up his directorial debut “The War Zone” by helming the Harold Pinter’s adaptation of “King Lear” for Film Four. He’s repped by IFA
