Sydney fest addition

World Brief

Sydney Film Festival topper Gayle Lake is planning to add a competitive sidebar to the 47-year-old festival.

Lake hopes to introduce the competitive sidebar for eight to 10 features from first- and second-time filmmakers for the fest’s 50th anniversary in 2003, if sufficient funds can be raised. Lake said the plan has already been given the nod by fest-accreditation body the International Federation of Film Producers’ Associations.

Despite booming admissions for international film fests in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, Oz lacks a competitive event.
