Steven Spielberg may soon make some magic of his own, reportedly opting to make J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” his next project.
As previously cited in Daily Variety (Dec. 23, 1999), Spielberg was given an exclusive peek at the 138-page first draft of the “Harry Potter” script adaptation by Warner Bros. late last year. The London Times reports that the powerful director has decided to helm and produce “Potter,” the popular tale of a schoolboy wizard. The decision put to rest speculation about which project the DreamWorks exec would choose next.
Spielberg was known to have been considering two other projects, “Minority Report” with Tom Cruise, and a Stanley Kubrick story outline entitled “A.I.” The filmmaker is already in development with DreamWorks projects “Memoirs of a Geisha” and the biopic “Lindbergh.”
