Seventh Art gets hands on ‘Big O’

Acquisition based on five-minute trailer

NEW YORK — In the first acquisition of the IFP Market, Seventh Art Releasing has bought world rights to “The Big O,” a docu about the female orgasm, with Seventh Art prexy Udy Epstein and Nuance Prods. head Arthur Spivak attached as exec producers. Paul Reiser, Spivak’s partner at Nuance, is attached to appear in the film.

“The Big O,” directed and produced by Michaline Babich and Bonnie Buckner, follows a thirtysomething woman on a quest to achieve her first orgasm. The myths and sociology of orgasms will be explored in interviews with therapists, sex experts and people from all walks of life — including Reiser.

Rarely is a film, especially one based on such limited material, acquired in the first few days of the IFP Market. Acquisition was based on a five-minute trailer and treatment.

Shelley Spevakow, head of acquisitions and development at Seventh Art, and Vernon Sanders, head of acquisitions and development at Nuance, brought the project into the two companies, respectively.

Babich just wrapped production on a half-hour pilot, “True Stories,” for the Zilo network.
