NEW YORK — Longtime Steven Seagal partner Julius Nasso is moving away from action pics to softer fare, forming Gotham-based shingle Julius R. Nasso Prods.
Company’s first pic, “Prince of Central Park,” based on the Broadway musical, opens Sept. 22 with Kathleen Turner and Harvey Keitel.
“One Eyed King,” with Billy Baldwin and Chazz Palminteri, starts principal photography in October. Nasso is in talks with Val Kilmer for his third project, “The Dark Side of Nowhere.”
Lions Gate Entertainment will distribute the first two pics domestically.
“For all those years I’ve been really exclusive with Steven on action films. I’d like to root myself back in New York, with different kinds of films,” Nasso said.
The pair’s Seagal/Nasso Prods., housed at Warner Bros., turned out “Above the Law,” “Hard to Kill,” “Marked for Life,” “Out for Justice,” “Under Siege” and “On Deadly Ground,” among others.
“Prince of Central Park” cost about $5 million, and Nasso would like to keep the others at that budget level. “I’m testing the waters,” he added.
As for Seagal, his latest project is “Exit Wounds,” produced by Joel Silver. It will be his first pic at Warner since “Fire Down Below” in 1997.
