South Korean pic “Lies,” written and directed by Jang Sun-woo, has been picked up for domestic release by Offline Releasing with Cowboy Booking Intl.
The film will open in New York on Nov. 17, with a Los Angeles engagement shortly to follow. It will roll out to 10 other cities in December and early 2001.
Adapted by Jang Sun-woo from Jang Jung-Il’s 1996 novel “Tell Me a Lie,” pic was initially refused theatrical release by the South Korean film board for its explicit depiction of a sadomasochistic sexual relationship between a schoolgirl and a sculptor in his late 30s.
It opened in South Korea in January after the director agreed to cut 17 minutes of footage that the board had considered indecent.
