CANNES — 2010, the film and TV subsid of giant Spanish media and publishing group Planeta Group, is in advanced talks to sign with the Warner Bros.-based Morgan Creek, marking its first major output deal.
The deal would involve Morgan Creek’s catalog and new pics.
Launched in 1999, Planeta 2010 began to make individual pic acquisitions this year. At Cannes, Planeta has also acquired the Hanway Films-sold animated feature “Help! I’m a Fish.”
In its first major TV deal, inked at this April’s Mip TV market, Planeta 2010 announced a joint venture with Germany’s EM.TV & Merchandising, Planeta Junior, to distrib kidfare programming in Spain and Portugal.
Morgan Creek has a relatively small but still valuable back catalog with standout titles such as “Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves” and the Jim Carrey “Ace Ventura” franchise.
In March, Morgan Creek inked a $200 million deal for a revolving credit line through a consortium of banks led by Chase Manhattan. The deal will partly finance a pic production slate that includes cross-dressing basketball comedy “Juwanna Mann,” oater “Jessie James” and John Milius’ “The Northmen.”
Neither Morgan Creek nor Planeta 2010 execs were available for comment.
