‘Pantaleon’ tops Brazil’s Gramado fest

Peruvian pic of Mario Vargas Llosa novel a hit at home

Francisco Lombardi’s Peruvian comedy “Pantaleon y las visitadoras” was the big winner at the 28th Festival de Gramado, one of Brazil’s oldest competitive film fests.

“Pantaleon” received kudos for best film, director, actor (Salvador del Solar), screenplay and editing, along with the jury and the critics’ prizes. Based on a novel by Mario Vargas Llosa about a morally conservative army officer whose duty includes organizing the visits of prostitutes to an isolated jungle army base, pic has sold an impressive 1 million tickets in Peru.

The Gramado fest was originally created to showcase local cinema and continues to attract leading local industryites to its mountain locale.
