PRAGUE — Czech Oscar submission “The Return of the Idiot” nabbed five awards, including the top three categories, at the national Czech Lion Awards.
It was a double win Saturday for writer-director Sasa Gedeon, as well as earning best film prize for producer Petr Oukropec. Nominated for all but one category, “Idiot” also took home supporting actress honors for Anna Geislerova and best music.
Audience response was decidedly split, with the popular “Pelisky,” the year’s overwhelming box office hit, garnering a single honor for best actor Jiri Kodet.
Among the more welcome wins were a supporting actor prize for Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival president Jiri Bartoska and a lifetime contribution award to Academy Award-winning cinematographer Miroslav Ondricek.
Surprise presenter William Hurt handed the best actress award to “Dvojrole’s” Tereza Brodska, winning in the evening’s most competitive category.
Best foreign film went to “Shakespeare in Love.”
