LONDON — Miramax Films has secured U.K. and Australian rights to “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” in return for releasing John Madden to direct the pic.
The film, starring Nicolas Cage, is being produced by Working Title Films, and is being co-financed by Universal Pictures and Canal Plus.
Madden was contracted to direct two more films for Miramax, but the company agreed to release him in return either for a co-production deal or for a share in the distribution rights. That deal has now been concluded, with Miramax set to release the pic in the U.K. and Oz through Buena Vista Intl.
Madden, making his first outing since “Shakespeare in Love,” came aboard earlier this month to replace Roger Michell, who was forced to drop out because of ill health.
The pic, a World War II romance set during the Italian occupation of Greece, will start shooting in April.
