Malkovich mulls Goblin

Role wouldn't be thesp's only turn as villain

John Malkovich is in negotiations to star as the Green Goblin in Sony and Marvel Entertainment’s “Spider-Man,” the studio’s bigscreen adaptation of the classic comicbook webslinger.

Malkovich has made a science of playing nefarious characters in pics like “Con Air,” “In the Line of Fire” and “Dangerous Liaisons.”

Insiders said Malkovich is likely to assume the dual role of the Goblin, who by night is the mortal nemesis of Spider-Man and by day is the next-door neighbor to the collegiate nice guy Peter Parker (who’ll be played by Tobey Maguire.)

Pic is being produced by Col-based Laura Ziskin Prods., and is being supervised by Columbia’s exec veepee of production Matt Tolmach.

Malkovich is repped by the William Morris Agency; he is managed by Gerry Harrington at Basic Entertainment in the U.S. and by Charles Finch of Eclipse Management in London.
