JOHANNESBURG — Local film “Yellow Card” has so captivated Zimbabwean audiences that the pic has broken box office records every week since it was released April 27.
Produced by Zimbabwe’s Media for Development and directed by John Riber, the movie tracks the love and sex life of a township teenager. It has so far grossed more than Zimbabwean $2 million (U.S. $50,000), a record for a local film in a country of around 12.5 million people, most of them unemployed or peasants. Interest continues to grow and distribution has been extended to the main provincial centers.
