ZURICH — Markus Imboden’s laffer “Comedians” has beaten Swiss box office opening-weekend records for a local pic, with some 27,000 admissions in 30 theaters — a level usually only reached by American films.
Pic toplines Beat Schlatter and Patrick Frey, well known cabaret-comedians. Good reviews by most Swiss critics also helped the film.
The film is the first release by newly founded Vega Distribution, headed by producer Ruth Waldburger of Zurich-based Vega Film, together with Adriano Vigano, former CEO of Buena Vista Switzerland.
The film is set in a retirement home, run by Frey, where Schlatter is living hidden in his mother’s room. When the home is to be closed down, Schlatter manages, with the help of the elderly residents, to buy the company that owns the home.
