Kopelson beams bucks to sci-fi thriller ‘Time’

Smith's spec fasttracked to avoid possible strike

Kopelson Entertainment has plunked down mid-to-high-six figures for “Buying Time,” a spec script from Mark Allen Smith.

Project is described as a sophisticated, futuristic sci-fi thriller centering on time travel.

Kopelson exec veep Matt Gross brought the script into the company and will oversee its development. The shingle hopes to put the pic into production prior to potential strikes next year.

Smith is currently writing an untitled Las Vegas project for HBO Pictures. His credits include “The Witching Hour,” which the Donners Co. is developing, and “Cold as Ice,” a spec he sold to Columbia just prior to the 1988 Writers Guild of America strike.

Smith is repped by Paradigm as well as managers Liz Robinson and Ilan Breil of Lasher, McManus, Robinson and Kipperman.
