Just weeks after successfully whetting exhibs’ appetites at ShoWest, Sony has opted to push back summer actioner “The Vertical Limit” to a Dec. 8 release.
Though never officially slotted for a specific weekend, the Martin Campbell-helmed “Limit” was expected to join “Hollow Man,” “The Patriot” and “Loser” on Sony’s summer slate.
Distrib chief Jeff Blake said the intricacy of the film’s special effects and a chance to counterprogram during the holidays drove the decision, which he stressed was made “out of confidence in the picture.”
Trailer of mountain-climbing thriller starring Chris O’Donnell screened as part of Sony’s product reel at ShoWest and drew hearty oohs and aahs. Adrenaline-pumped sequence showed climbers falling from sheer ice faces, trying to rescue each other and finally looking up to see a wall of snow thundering down the mountain.
“We just felt that it wasn’t worth rushing,” Blake said. “The filmmakers were willing to try, but this way we can be the picture at that time. This is a real event movie.”
