Hauser to pen ‘Gate’ script

Lynda Obst hires scribe to adapt bestseller

Paramount Pictures-based Lynda Obst Prods. has brought on writer Stephen Hauser (“Sphere”) to pen the screen adaptation of Robert Stone’s novel “Damascus Gate,” which Obst optioned earlier this year (Daily Variety, Jan. 10).

The New York Times bestseller and National Book Award nominee spins the tale of an American journalist investigating religious extremists in Jerusalem.

Hauser’s Vatican thriller “By Matthem Rove” is in development at Warner Bros., with Chris O’Donnell starring for George Street Prods.

Stone’s novels transformed into film have included “Dog Soldiers,” which became “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” and “Hall of Mirrors,” which became “WUSA.”

Marc Rosen is overseeing “Damascus Gate” for Obst. Hauser is repped by Brian Sher of Broder Kurland Webb Uffner Agency and attorney Carlos Goodman.
