Globo revs up ‘Auto’

World Brief

Globo Filmes, the film division of Brazilian media giant Globo, launched “O Auto da Compadecida” on Sept. 15. Columbia TriStar do Brasil is distributing the film locally.

Originally a four-episode film series, “Auto” aired on Organizacoes Globo’s broadcaster TV Globo in early 1999 and earned high ratings and good reviews. Director Guel Arraes re-edited the series down to a feature-length pic.

It is the second partnership between Globo Filmes and Columbia, which released kidpic “O Trapalhao e a Luz Azul” in 1998-99. It was one of the most successful Brazilian pics in recent years, with about 1.6 million tickets sold.

Columbia has not decided whether it will launch “Auto” abroad.

Pic stars 1998 best actress Oscar nominee Fernanda Montenegro.
