Disney keen on teen ‘Guy’

Pic greenlit with summer launch in mind

Disney is heading back to high school with “The New Guy,” a teenage comedy from scribe David Kendall. Ed Decter, one of the writers of “There’s Something About Mary,” is on board to make his directorial debut.

Pic has been greenlit with a summer start date in mind. Buena Vista Motion Picture Group co-presidents Todd Garner and Nina Jacobson will oversee the movie for the Mouse House; Garner helped develop the story idea along with Kendall and the producers.

Through their Bedlam Pictures banner, Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray will produce with John J. Strauss exec producing. Strauss and Decter co-wrote “There’s Something About Mary” with the Farelly brothers.

‘Uncool’

“New Guy” centers on a high school senior branded “uncool” long ago in ninth grade; in an effort to change his image, he gets himself expelled so he can be a cool kid at the town’s other high school. The plan goes perfectly until his nemesis from the first school joins him at the new school, and his former identity catches up to him.

Strauss and Decter are producing “Fugly” for Warner Bros, starring Jamie Foxx, and “Alphamale” for the Mouse House. They are also exec producing for Universal “Head Over Heels,” with Bob Simonds producing.

The duo is developing “The Secret Lives of Debutantes” with Minnie Driver attached to star.

’25 to Life’

Ciardi and Gray have set up at Disney “25 to Life,” which they will produce along with John Turteltaub’s Junction Entertainment and which Turteltaub has expressed interest in directing.

Ciardi and Gray’s deal was brokered by David Webber at Bloom, Cook, Diemer, Hergott and Klein.

Decter and Strauss are repped by Bruce Kaufman at Broder Kurland Webb Uffner.
