MADRID — Giant Spanish paybox Canal + Espana looks set to create its own production shingle to oversee its forceful entry into film and TV production, including TV movies, series, documentaries and animation.
The operation could be called Tele Plus, Canal + Espana general manager Jose Manuel Lorenzo declared at a roundtable in Madrid Wednesday.
As a precedent, Lorenzo cited the strategy of HBO, which has powered up subscriptions through financing original TV movies and series.
Although few more details are known about the TV production house, it dovetails with the strategy of Canal + Espana’s parent company, conglom Sogecable, to hike its production activities.
Canal + Espana’s production house looks likely to channel co-productions emerging from recent agreements with Television de Galicia (TVG) and ETB, the regional pubcasters in Galicia and the Basque Country.
